Not that a soundtrack is altogether vital to a novel, but I have a certain "thing" for letting other people know what music in particular should be associated with the body of work. In case you're wondering, *yes*, this is an essentially pointless endeavor, but here's something that may change your mind:

A friend of mine...we'll call her 'Barbie', was invited to a Halloween party two days before Halloween. Suddenly left in a spot without a costume, Barbie spent her meager $30 housesitting check for that week on a 5' black wig and two $7 bottles of purple hair dye. The wig was nothing to shout about, it got tangled in everything, and she couldn't get her fingers through it, much less a hairbrush, much MUCH less hair dye. The wig ended up in the trash, she was left with $14 worth of hair dye she could never use, and she had to bum a ride to the party because she had no money for gas. The costume she ended up with looked very simply like a two dollar whore.

Soundtrack for a novel doesn't seem so pointless now, does it? Read on, minions...

Oh, I'd like to point out that some of these lyrics I typed up my self, but a lot of them I had to search for across the internet. In the heat of the moment I've forgotten what sites I took them from. If you recognize a lyric-typing stilo indigenous to your page, let me know. I'll credit everyone eventually.

My Little Demon
by Lindsey Buckingham
My little demon, comin'on down.
My little demon's turnin' me around.
all of my friends keep on tellin'me
that I just ain't the man I used to be.
I really don't like it...ain't nothing I can do.
I really don't like it...I'm leaving it to you.
My little demon, making me choose.
Making me an offer I can't refuse.
Hard as a rock,dry as a bone...
Big or little, know that I will take you home.
I really don't like it...ain't nothin'I can do.
I really don't like it...I'm leaving it to you.
Why try to hide it?
Fight it...fight it!
I really don't like it...ain't nothin'I can do.
I really don't like it...I'm leaving it to you.
My little demon is coming after me.
My little demon...
It's all that I can do to keep that little demon...
To keep that little demon...
Just to keep that little demon away from you!

Living Dead Girl
by Rob Zombie
Rage in the cage
and piss upon the stages
Only one sure way
to bring the giant down
Defunct the strings
of cemetary things
with one flat foot
on the devil's wing

Crawl on me
sink into me
Die for me
Living Dead Girl

Raping the geek
and hustling the freak
like a hunchback juice
On a sentimental noose
Operation filth
They love to love the wealth
Of an SS Whore
Making scary sounds

Crawl on me
sink into me
Die for me
Living Dead Girl

Psyclone Jack
Hallucinating hack
thinks of Donna Reed
eats dollar bills
Goldfoot's machine
creates another fiend
So beautiful
they make you
kill

Crawl on me
sink into me
Die for me
Living Dead Girl

Blood on her skin
Dripping with sin
Do it again
Living Dead Girl

Livin and Rockin
by 311
Fire is my method for destruction
Leaving charred wrecakge from my latest eruption
Unpredictable my erratic demeanor
Bobbing and weaving as my mind gets leaner
Though I'm tripping on legs that stumble but I don't fall down
You know I'm singing out things you mumble
From a lack of resound
Pissed off mist lifts to honesty
Now come down motherfucker with your philosophy

I'm at ease when I feel there's a breeze give me a little please
Aristotle I'm not but think of Socrates
Are you ready for your lesson blood?
Democratic, non-erratic, Socratic method
We'll take away the pain
We'll pacify the bullshit built up in your brain
In the times of change or the same old things.
As you maintain or rearrange

Can't nobody do it like 311
Fucking up competition cos there really is none
Steppin' on your game from the first floor up tore up
Electricty we store we it

Can't nobody do it like 311
break it down, what it is, dedication
Sending out gratitude like we laid it out on Down
Throw down, fuck the bullshit we're still the sound.

Wild and lost speed mad
A long way from sad
Lookin good like you should you're bad
An itenerant dimension mystic is your spirit see
Like color absolute bodiless indeed
Casual kindred spirit past
All the obstacles you're dealing with at last
The nasdq, two puppies, baby needs new shoes
Car alarms, your rent, wedding bells, the blues.

The tragic fucking comedy that was last night
Unless to my inner devil's sheer delight
A pointless fucking banter in an endless bout
With whiskey soaked tonic room tobacco mouth
Then a sickening trip to what I call the elitist cesspool
Beckoning all the sycophants and defeated
yes-fools
Hung-over, broke, and a round of apologies
Now come down Martinz with your modern mythology

Can't nobody do it like 311
Fucking up competition cos there really is none
Steppin' on your game from the first floor up tore up
Electricty we store we it

Can't nobody do it like 311
break it down, what it is, dedication
Sending out gratitude like we laid it out on Down
Throw down, fuck the bullshit we're still the sound.

Temptation
by Heaven 17
I've never been closer
I've tried to understand
That certain feeling
Carved by another's hand
But it's too late to hesitate
We can't keep on living like this
Leave no track
Don't look back

All I desire
Temptation
Keep climbing higher and higher
Temptation
Adorable creatures
Temptation
With unacceptable features
Temptation
Trouble is coming
Temptation
It's just the high cost of loving
Temptation
You can take it or leave it
Temptation
But you'd better believe it

You've got to make me an offer
That cannot be ignored
So let's head for home now
Everything I have is yours
Step by step and day by day
Every second counts I can't break away
Leave no trace
Hide your face

All I desire
Temptation
Keep climbing higher and higher
Temptation
Adorable creatures
Temptation
With unacceptable features
Temptation
Trouble is coming
Temptation
It's just the high cost of loving
Temptation
You can take it or leave it
Temptation
But you'd better believe it
Keep us from temptation
Lead us not into temptation
Trying to find it
Temptation
You've got to get up behind it
Temptation
Put your dime in the hot slot
Temptation
But it's a million to one shot
Temptation
You think that you're right no
Temptation
You're going to fake it tonight now
Temptation
Give me a breakdown
Temptation
Because it's time for a shakedown

Hero
by the Verve Pipe
i can't believe that it was good for anyone, to me worth the wait
i doubt that anybody got their money's worth
but the attention sure felt great
with all eyes upon me, some filled with tears, some couldn't see
it burned like a cancer when the answer did occur to me
creep from the cradle, but a hero's what i wanna be
keep it moving people cause there's nothing more for you to see
i'm just a jerk, but a hero's what i wanna be yeah, oh yeah
love me, love me sweet cowardice
now that the thrill is mine for the moment
we really didn't need another suicide
or a song explaining why, but it's not dignified
but i can't seem to kiss it goodbye
it burned like a cancer...
keep it moving people...
it burned ...
keep it.....
erase this disaster even faster than you came to see
a creep from the cradle and a hero driven wanna be
for your abuse, but not intended for internal use
i'm just a jerk , but a hero's what i wanna be

Cohorts
by Rainbow Sugar
I really wish I had the lyrics to 'Cohorts'. In fact, I wish I had the lyrics to any of Rainbow Sugar's awesome songs. You see, that oft-mentioned, thoughtful s.o.b. Tom sent me an uncirculated demo of quite possibly one of the most innovative and amazing bands lurking in the shadows of struggling-artisthood. Their name is Rainbow Sugar. This song is called 'Cohorts' and it is absolutely wonderful.

Head
by Tin Star
sometimes I wake up in morning
my feet my soul my arms my legs
my self my eggs are all fried
I've got to do my exams today
I've read my books turned up on time
but I haven't revised
I'm not getting along
I'm not getting the answers
I'm not getting along
I'm not getting the answers
Cos I can't get it out of my head
Sometimes I wake up uncool uptight
I'm tired of being tired
but in my dreasm my arms are open wide
open wide
I open up my eyes
open up my eyes
But everything is dark
I think I'm blind
I'm not getting along
I'm not getting the answers
I'm not getting along
I'm not getting the answers
Cos I can't get it out of my head
This profession is my obsession
And this obsession is my depression
This depression is my release
This release will never cease

Old Brown Shoe
by The Beatles
I want a love that's right but right is only half of what's wrong
I want a short haired girl who sometimes wears it twice as long
Now I'm stepping out this old brown shoe, baby,
I'm in love with you
I'm so glad you came here,
it won't be the same now,
I'm telling you

You know you pick me up from where some try to drag me down
And when I see your smile replace every thoughtless frown
Got me escaping from this zoo, baby,
I'm in love with you
I'm so glad you came here,
it won't be the same now when I'm with you

If I grow up I'll be a singer wearing rings on every finger
Not worrying what they or you say
I'll live and love and maybe someday
Who knows, baby, you may comfort me

I may appear to be imperfect,
my love is something you can't reject
I'm changing faster than the weather
if you and me should get together
Who knows, baby, you may comfort me

That love of yours,
to miss that love is something I'd hate
I'll make an early start,
I'm making sure that I'm not late
For you sweet top lip I'm in the queue,
baby, I'm in love with you
I'm so glad you came here,
it won't be the same now when I'm with you
I'm so glad you came here,
it won't be the same now when I'm with you

all talk of circadian rhythm

I see today with a newsprint fray
my night is colored headache grey

the bull and the bear are marking
their territories
they're leading the blind with
their international glories

I'm the screen, the blinding light
I'm the screen, I work at night.

my night is colored headache grey
don't wake me with so much.

I cried the other night
I can't even say why

No Sugar/New Mother Nature
by The Guess Who
Lonely feelin' deep inside
Find a corner where I can hide
Silent footsteps crowdin' me
Sudden darkness, but I can see

No sugar tonight in my coffee
No sugar tonight in my tea
No sugar to stand beside me
No sugar to run with me

In the silence of her mind
Quiet movements, well, I can find
Grabbin' for me with her eyes
Now I'm fallin' from her skies

No sugar tonight in my coffee
No sugar tonight in my tea
No sugar to stand beside me
No sugar to run with me

{"New Mother Nature"}
Jocko says yes and I believe him
When we talk about the things I say
She hasn't got the faith or the guts to leave him
When they're standin' in each other's way
You're driven back now to places you've been to
You're wonderin' what you're gonna find
You know you've been wrong but it won't be long
Before you leave 'em all far behind

'Cause it's the new Mother Nature takin' over
It's the new splendid lady come to call
It's the new Mother Nature takin' over
She's gettin' us all
She's gettin' us all

Jocko said no when I came back last time
It's lookin' like I lost a friend
No use callin' 'cause the sky is fallin'
And I'm gettin' pretty near the end
A smoke-filled room in a corner basement
The situation must be right
A bag o' goodies and a bottle o' wine
We're gonna get it on right tonight

'Cause it's the new Mother Nature takin' over
It's the new splendid lady come to call
It's the new Mother Nature takin' over
She's gettin' us all
She's gettin' us all

{1st verse of "No Sugar Tonight" sung simultaneously with
1st verse of "New Mother Nature"}
Lonely feelin'

Where I can hide
When they're standin' in each other's way Silent footsteps

Father Figure
by George Michael
That's all I wanted
Something special, something sacred
In your eyes
For just one moment
To be bold and naked
At your side
Sometimes I think that you'll never
Understand me
Maybe this time is forever
Say it can be

That's all you wanted
Something special, someone sacred
In your life
Just for one moment
To be warm and naked
At my side

Sometimes I think that you'll never
Understand me
But something tells me together
We'd be happy

(Baby)
I will be your father figure
(Oh baby)
Put your tiny hand in mine
(I'd love to)
I will be your preacher teacher
(Be your daddy)
Anything you have in mind
(It would make me)
I will be your father figure
(Very happy)
I have had enough of crime
(Please let me)
I will be the one who loves you
Until the end of time

That's all I wanted
But sometimes love can be mistaken
For a crime
That's all I wanted
Just to see my baby's
Blue eyed shine
This time I think that my lover
Understands me
If we have faith in each other
Then we can be
Strong

I will be your father figure
Put your tiny hand in mine
I will be your preacher teacher
Anything you have in mind
I will be your father figure
I have had enough of crime
I will be the one who loves you
Until the end of time

If you are the desert
I'll be the sea
If you ever hunger
Hunger for me
Whatever you ask for
That's what I'll be

So when you remember the ones who have lied
Who said that they cared
But then laughed as you cried
Beautiful Darling
Don't think of me

Because all I ever wanted
It's in your eyes baby, baby
And love can't lie, no...
(Greet me with the eyes of a child)
My love is always tell me to...
(Heaven is a kiss and a smile)
Just hold on, hold on
I won't let you go, my baby

I will be your father figure
Put your tiny hand in mine
I will be your preacher teacher
Anything you have in mind
I will be your father figure
I have had enough of crime
(So I am gonna love you)
Until the end of time
I will be your father
I will be your preacher
I will be your daddy
I will be the one who loves you until the end of time

I Love You
by Sarah McLachlan
I have a smile
stretched from ear to ear
I see you walking down the road
I meet at the lights
I stare for a while
The world
around us disappears
It's just you and me
on my island of hope
a breath between us could be miles
let me surround you
a sea
to your shore
let me be the calm you seek
and every time I'm close to you
there's too much I can't say
and you just walk
away...
and I forgot
to tell you I love you
and night's too long
I'm cold here without you
I grieve in my condition
for I cannot find the words
to say I need you so
... oh, everytime I'm close to you
there's too much I can't say
and you just walk away
and I forgot
to tell you I love you,
and lines too long
I'm cold here without you
I greive here in my condition
for I cannot find the words
to say I need you so.

Message of Love
by the Pretenders
now the reason we're here
as man and woman
is to love each other
take care of each other
when love walks in the room
everybody stand up
oh it's good, good, good
like brigitte bardot
now look at the people
in the streets, in the bars
we are all of us in the gutter
but some of us are looking at the stars
look round the room
life is unkind
we fall but we keep gettin' up
over and over and over and over and over and over
me and you, every night, every day
we'll be together always this way
your eyes are blue like the heavens above
talk to me darlin' with a message of love
now the reason we're here
every man, every woman
is to help each other
stand by each other
when love walks in the room
everybody stand up
oh it's good, good good
say i love you, i love you, i love you, i love you, i love you, i love you
talk to me darlin'

Deep Purple
by Nino Temple and April Stevens
When the deep purple falls
over sleepy garden walls
and the stars begin to twinkle
in the sky
through the mist of a memory
you come running back to me
breathing my name
with a sigh
in the still of the night
once again I hold you tight
though you're gone
your love lives on
when moonlight beams
and as long as my heart will beat
my lover we'll always meet
here in my deep purple dreams

Earlier this year.....August, I believe, I heard this song while hacking into the computer of the family I housesit for, and I feel in love with it. As I started writing 'ats', I suddenly started imagining Helen singing this tune, kind of like a siren song, at certain points throughout the book. If you've never heard this lovely composition (not entirely impossible...no one seems to remember it), you would probably recognize it if you heard it.
